Politics as a subject

Politics class

The goal of political education is the responsible citizen - can you do my homework . In school political education, students should therefore get an idea of the complex reality and the formative elements of politics. Next to

  • the teaching of skills and instruments for independent analysis and assessment of political issues is the aim of political education
  • Arouse interest in politics and them
  • encourage active participation.

Furthermore, the students should identify with the basic democratic values.

Political education as a school subject does not have a nationwide uniform subject name. Depending on the state, it will

  • Social studies,
  • Social studies,
  • Social studies,
  • Politics,
  • Political education,
  • Political world studies,
  • Social sciences

called or similar. This
variety of names is due to the development of the teaching subject after 1945. After the end of the Second World War, the four victorious powers pursued different approaches with regard to the reorganization of the school system. The Americans in particular wanted to lay the foundation for a democratic political culture in Germany through re-education . Therefore, in 1946 in the states of Berlin, Schleswig-Holstein and Hesse, and in 1949 in Württemberg-Hohenzollern as well, a politically oriented subject was introduced, each with different names.
